24.Individual Ideas

The genre my group has chosen is Crime Drama.

My film will be set in a house where theses young teens are preparing for a robbery, they put on masks and exit the room door. In the rest of the film they would have completed this robbery but later on regret as they face serious consequences.

A flat in a housing estate or some type of room.

There will be weaponry props with drugs, money and masks. Costumes will be all black intimidating clothing.

The characters will be teenagers around 17-18 boys.

The titles would be quiet basic with black and white because it will be effective and also leave the audience with suspicion of what will happen.

The music would be a Drill, rap playlist the encounter the modern 'ghetto' life of young deprived teenagers in London.

Individual ideas.

Group 30 have concluded that teen crime genre will be our genre.

Location- Hackney, Hoxton as it is very urban and would match our genre

Props/costumes:
My film would have a range of props and dull similar costumes as it will be black and white.

Characters:
My title sequence wouldn't be patriarchal but it would mainly feature young boys age 16-19 as boys are usually more involved in gang activity.

Titles:
Titles with moving images would be used where titles are incorporated with moving images

Soundscape:

Mood Board

Head On Activity

Group 30 have decided to make a title sequence in the teen crime drama genre.

Teen Crime Drama Example

In my potential film, a young entrepreneur (male) will meet and get befriended and betrayed by a local gang leader preying on his success. To achieve this, we would need to film in an office like setting (for instance using a classroom or designated office space). As my film begins in media res, only one setting would be used, though if they feel was to be filmed till the end, domestic and cityscape settings might feature. Props might include light weaponry, for instance bats, robbery masks and office equipment like a laptop. Costumes will be casual and dark for those in the gang, whereas the clothing of the young entrepreneur, keeping in mind age expectation, would look smarter. There will be two main characters in the title sequence and maximum of ten in the entire film; The young entrepreneur, the gang leader and other background characters used to set the scene.
My titles will be over moving images. The soundscape will be a compilation of a soundtrack and ambient sound. A possible for soundtrack for use would be Flowers X Patron by A2 and Krept&Konan. I chose this song not only because the artists wold theoretically be familiar to the type characters in the film and the viewers of the title sequence, but also the lyrics link to the themes of money, grind mindset and false friends.

Analysis of Codes & Conventions

Genre Shortlist

1. Crime
2. Teen Drama
3. Thrilller

Evaluation of The Breakfast Club Remake

To begin, it was fairly easy to identify and then not down each shot in the sequence. My group successfully storyboarded the shots, give or take a few less significant ones, in good detail. Our choices of location and props etc. were accurate and thus positively impacted on our final product. We used a simple and unchallenging method of creating titles to resemble that of the real title sequence. The film title was the same as in the original, yellow, large, written on three lines and in an un-stylised font, so fit the tone of the film. The title credits we used were white and in a large enough font so that they were easily visible but didn't take away from the movement in the opening. The titles were integrated and all looked similar, minus their positioning on the screen. We also added in a clip of '20th Century Box' display which added to our remake's authenticity. If I were to complete this task again I would include more shots to build up the setting and lengthen the title sequence and ensure we film in the correct lighting.

Genre shortlist

HORROR:
Horror is one of my potential choices as it is my favourite genre, I
feel as if it would appeal to many young people as it is thrilling and leaves audiences in suspense and due to this I feel as if my title sequence would leave viewers curious.

GANGSTA DOCUMENTARY:
I've chosen gangsta documentary as a potential for my final title sequence as this genres always appealed to me and I feel as if it relates the society we now live in which the youth would find particularly interesting.

ACTION:

Action is a potential for my final title sequence as it loved by many people and would appeal to a wider audience. It is also jam-packed with entertainment.

Target audience

What is a target audience?

A target audience is a general group of people that something is aimed to whether it is film or clothing. In marketing a target audience is key as the consumer would need to know if the product fit their criteria.

Why are target audiences useful to films?

Target audiences are useful to films as they provide the viewers with what would entertain them happy. If films didn't have trailers or age guides people would end up watching up something with no interest to them.

Different genres.

I believe that animation would most suitable for young girls and boys all over the world as they are still developing and believe in fairytales and myths.

Action would be more suitable for 12A mainly boys as they find these type of films interesting and thrilling to watch such as Iron man or Taken.

Horror's age viewings usually fluctuate, depending on how scary a film may be or if includes graphic content but this genre is loved by many people including both male and female. The age viewings are always 15 or 18.

My Findings

Conclusion

Gender

I found out from my survey that males middle aged favourite genre was action. I expected this as this was the same findings as the BFI film year book.
I found out that females aged middle aged favourite genre was Comedy. This was not what i expected  I thought that females favourite genre would be Romance as females are quite sensitive and emotional and like films like this.

Age

I also found out that 11 out of 15 peoples favourite movie was of an action genre. I believe this is because, action is very broad and normally  incorporates a lot of other genres within for example romance, also action is very thrilling and interesting so this is why i think it appeals to a lot of people.

Nationality

People I surveyed said that they preferred watching american movies, they said that they think americans are better actors and have more advanced techniques and equitment than the UK.
Also 14 of the 15 people I interviewed favourite actors were male I think this incorporates with that fact that people prefer America films.

Location

Majority of poeple in my survey said that they preferred a city location. I think this ties in to all of my other findings as people prefer action movies and action movies tend to be set in a busy city and there is a lot going on and can incorporate action easier, it is unlikely you will find an action movie set on a pretty beach.

What is Target Audience ?

What is a target audience?

target audience is the intended audience or readership of a publication, advertisement, or other message. In marketing and advertising, it is a particular group of consumers within the predetermined target market, identified as the targets or recipients for a particular advertisement or message.Businesses that have a wide target market will focus on a specific target audience for certain messages to send.

Why are target audience useful in film?

Whenever people watch a film, they’re looking to find something. It could be something as direct as someone just going to the cinema to watch anything, because they want to. Or they may not even know they’re looking for something – they’re just hoping to find it.
Once you identify why your audience is watching your film, you can make some really good choices. You can decide what genre your going to use and what information you’re going to include. You can create and make a list of things you think they'll like incorporated in a film. You can do everything possible to thoroughly please them when they watch your film.
Film making takes time. And it’ll take even longer if you don’t know who your audience is. It’s no good assuming things about them. If you create content based around their assumptions, your audience will become lost.

What different genres appeal to different people?

I think that different people enjoy watching different genres for example, I think that younger audiences prefer to watch things such as animation and comedy as its quite child friendly and is fictionary and children and young people tend to have a better imagination and enjoy it more than an older person.
I think that older people prefer to watch films with more of a backing story and films with more meaning behind them. I think this because, I believe older people like to be shocked and intrigued as they've seen a lot in there life they want something different so something that interests them is appealing.
Furthermore, I believe that gender has an important part in different genres. Whereas makes tend to like more thriller and action movies as there more masculine and find dangerous and thrilling. Contrastingly, I believe females prefer films such a such as Teen dramas and Romcoms.
I also think that peoples interests also depend of what type of films they watch for example if you have a certain interest in sports or animals your more likely to watch films in that genre possibly to see how they relate to you or just to watch it because thats what you enjoy.

favourite student title sequence

Favourite previous work

I think that Asha’s group had a really good title sequence because, it was very entertaining even though it had not even been a minute into the film. I think that the fact that they used anger and serious emotions creates a good feel for the film and makes you want to watch more, to possibly find out what happens as your left with an answered question.
Also I think that they used good shot types which best fit the story line, short cuts between eat shot hightened the tension. Also I liked the body language they used that fact that Asha stood up which further showed her emotions and adding to it, she also raised her voice and I think using these devices contributed to the film opening well.
I also think they chose a good spot as they had good lighten which is always key in any film and film opening. I think that some improvements they could make would be making the different shots sharper and making sure there in the same place as the last ones so it looks more profession but over all i think they did very well.

BFI statisical yearbook

Genre

The three genres that were most successful at the UK box office were Animation, Adventure and Comedy. Animation, the highest earning genre of 2013, accounted for only 5% of releases but took 21% of the total  box office. The  top earning  animation  was  Despicable  me 2.

In  2013-14  the  genre  that  had  the  most  released  was  comedy,  with  a number  of  153  releases.
  • There  were  33  animated  films  made  in 2013-14.
  • There  were  47  action  films  made  in  2013-14.
This  information  about  genre  tells  us  that  there  is  clearly  a larger demands for comedy  films  as  it is  the  highest  number. It  could  also  tell  us  that  films  that  are  already  out   in  films; the  comedy films  have  been  watch  the  most  and  this  is  why  they  have  made   more. Furthermore  it  could  also  tell  us  that  there  may  not  be  enough  actors  available  to do  certain  films  resulting  in  film  production  being  slowed  down. Another  aspect  of  these  results  could  be  that  children  (that   most  likely  watch  animation)  are  not  allowed  out  to  the  cinema  by  themselves  and  there  parents  may  not  be  wiling  to  take  them,  therefore  there  is  a low  viewing  capacity  for  animation  therefore  they  make  less. A  reason  I  think  that  action  film  making  it  quite  low  is because  action  films  require  a lot  from  the  editing  to the  special  effects . I  think  because  it  takes  longer  to  make  the films  less   are  realized.

Audiences

In 2013, the 15-24 age group made up the largest proportion of UK cinema admissions, at 33%.
Hangover  Part III  had  the  largest  above -average  audience  share  among  the  15-24  age  group,  while  Quartet  had  the  largest  share  among  cinema -goers  aged  55  and  above.
A  wide  range  of  genres  appealed  to  woman,  whereas  action  films,  comedy  and  thrillers  were popular  with  men ,  with  Captain  Phillips  and Alan  Partridge: Alpha  Papa  drawing  larger  than  average  audiences. UK  films  were popular  across  all  demographic  groups,  with  a  particularly  strong  appeal  for  those  aged  45  and  above. Older  audiences  also  showed  a  strong  preference  for  UK  impendent  films.
Black  and  minority  ethic  groups  were  over-represented  among  buyers  of  cinema   tickets, video  rental  and  digital  film;  disabled  audiences  were over-represented  amongst  video  buyers.

The audience lies at the heart of a vibrant and successful  film economy and culture,  yet current insight provides a limited perspective on audience engagement. New research is needed to show the full picture of the audience on all platforms.

Animations such as Wreck-itRalph, Despicable me 2 and Monsters University were of particular appeal to the 7-13 age group but the film with the highest significant above-average audience in this category was the boy-band concert documentary One Direction: This Is Us.
The fact that these were children's most watched films in cinema shows us that children enjoy more fiction animations and referring to the One Direction film children take a strong interest in music, so a popular young boy band would be appealing to them is what I believe.

The three most popular  films with the 35-44 age group were Frozen, The Croods and Jack and the Giant Slayer. I think that these were the most popular films in this age group because I think that films in the 1960's early 1970's films were similar to these films as a lot of them are based on old films so I think they find it interesting to see the 20th century's perspective on film. I think that another perspective could be that people between these ages have children, more likely to be young, so they take there children to the cinema to watch these films.

Social groups

The C1 social group were attracted to a range of genres, including action, sci-fi and drama. The most popular titles amongst audiences in this group were Rush, Captain Phillips and Gravity.
Family Films, comedies and action films appealed most to the C2  groups. Fast & Furious 6 and Despicable Me 2 attracted above-average audience in both groups.

The western Django Unchained attracted the highest significant above-average audience in London, followed by  Fast & Furious 6, and gravity.
Audiences in Scotland have shown preference for films based on home-grown characters and locations. In 2013, both Sunshine on Leith and Filth attracted significant audiences.

Conclusions

I think that the film viewers are significantly different in London and Scotland because the rural surrounding are very different it changes people views and what they find interesting. where as in Scotland there is a lot of grass, g=trees and nature surrounding which may influence on to watch a more home-grown film.
Where as in London there are more flats, houses and a busy environment which may lead to people wanting to watch a more action packed genre as its what there uses to.

Favourite previous student work

My favourite previous student work:

Group 3- Lara, Denya, Marina and Hiba.

This previous work is my favourite as it features suspense throughout the whole title sequence and is entertaining to watch as you're curious as to what is happening. The use of an ident makes the title sequence seem more realistic and puts it a higher standard in comparison to others.

The title sequence type is titles with moving images which incorporates credits with the images which is presented really well by this group.

Involountary by group 3.

The transitions for different scenes are really smooth and doesn't look static which shows how well they edited their title sequence, they also included special effects to make the audience feel on edge about watching the title sequence.

Creating Soundscapes

Why is sound so important in a film?

What is sound?

Sound is simply a noise or a combination of noises, a finer definition for this would be; vibrations that travel through the air or another medium which can be heard by humans or animals.

Why is sound key in films?

When watching a film is key as it enthuses the audience and makes them more intrigued. Without sound the film would be boring and as result of this it would lose interest.

The Importance of Sound In Film

'' Sound is 50% of the film ''
George Lukas

Sound is used in a film to establish tone, atmosphere and to help give the audience clues about the genre of the film. It also contributes to the 'suspending of disbelief' to create realism for the viewers. Others have said sound is a three dimensional visceral experience that makes the film as enjoyable to hear as it is to watch it.

A film features/ uses...
  • Sound (in media) - something that can be heard
  • Soundscape - a piece of music considered in terms of its component sounds, creating layering in a film's audio/overall piece
  • Sound Design - the process of specifying, acquiring, manipulating or generating audio elements
  • Suspension of Disbelief - the sacrifice of realism and logic for the sake of enjoyment

As part of an experiment, we watched a title sequence with and without sound and saw that without sound, the title sequence was uninteresting and made us distracted, although making us pay more attention to detail in the sequence (i.e read all the actor's names). In comparison the title sequence with sound was entertaining and made the sequence more powerful.

sound in film

Why is sound so important in film?

Sound is used in film to establish tone, atmosphere and to give the audience clues about the plot, characters or to identify the genre of the film.It is also used to help 'suspend disbeleif' to create realism for the viewer and heighten their experience of the film,
George Lukas, director of the star wars franchise, argues that 'sound is 50%'. In order words, without the sound you only have half the product or a film that isnt as good as it could be, There have been many devekoments in sound and sound design over thecourse of the film history and we now have the technology to ensure that film is as enjoyable to hear as it is to watch.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2ty67xLEbHU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

In the clip above you can see how sound is very effective in the film, where as if you listen to the clip on mute you will not be as interested as focused as the film  normally tells us when a climax is coming whether that be a scream or a tighten in music. Sound is very important and i believe with out it films wouldn't be as interesting and enjoyable as they are today. I think that the genre most effected by sound would be horror and action I think this because, in these genres there are a lot of climax scenes which show and intense in the film which really cause tension which contribute to the film well.

Target Audience

What is an audience?

Definition :

an individual or collective group that read or consume any media text

What is Target Audience?

Definition :
a particular group at which a product such as a film or advertisement is aimed

Establishing a target audience for a film is especially important in tailoring your film to appeal to that specific audience and make it a success. It is essentially vital in determining the film's content.

In my opinion, specific audiences appeal to specific genres. For instance, horror films may appeal to a younger audience of both sexes, whereas some people might argue romances appeal to adult females; The same way, animations appeal to children and political films may appeal to  a target audience in a relative location.

To prove my analysis of target audience I conducted a survey using  survey.zoho.com

BFI Statistics Yearbook

According to the BFI Statistics Yearbook..

The three most successful genres at the UK box office were animation, action and comedy. The three least popular or successful genres were romance, documentary and war. The Comedy film genre had most films released in 2013-14; there were 153 films made in this genre. 33 animated films were made. 47 action films were made.  From this i can infer, the companies producing comedies were most successful this year and the comedy genre audiences are the most populous and most active.

Audiences between the ages of 15 and 24 made up the largest proportion of cinema admissions in the UK in this time period. The comedy film 'Hangover Part III' was most successful with this age group. Independent films were most popular with the over 50s. 'Wreck It Ralph ', 'Despicable Me 2' and 'Monsters University' were most popular with the 7-14 age group, showing their preferred genre is animation.  Frozen, The Croods and Jack the Giant Slayer were most popular amongst the 35-44 year old audience. This might be because these are the ages of parents, contributing to animation being the most successful genre at the box office because it appeals to entire families. Middle class C1 was attracted to sci-fi and dramas, including the film 'Gravity'. The C2 demographic liked action and comedy, for instance 'Fast and Furious 6'. In London, the most popular films were action, drama (Django Unchained) and sci-fi (Gravity), whereas in Scotland, the most popular films were films set locally and had similar surroundings/lifestyle. The key difference here is thus between preference in actors birthplace and setting.

Audience Research Activity

Audience Research Activity

Audience: Assembled spectators or listeners at a public event as a play, film or concert.

Target Audience: A particular group at which product such as film or advertisement is aimed.

Recognising your target audience early on in pre-production is vital to determine content in the film. For example a title sequence for a teenage film would be different to a title sequence for an elderly film.

A teen drama genre would be more aimed at teenagers however a animation like "Shrek" would be aimed at young children because the structure and plot of the film would be more simple for their understanding. On the other hand teen dramas are usually set in a high school for example "high school musical" this could enable teenagers to understand and relate to the actors and actresses.

This is my survey I created to develop a clear idea of audiences tastes and preferences.

Below are the interviews of people from different types of target audiences.

Categorising Title Sequences

Title sequences can be identified in four different categories.

My personal preference is titles using animation or motion because they are the most creative and the possibilities within them are endless.

1. Narrative title sequences

The titles begin as the film begins- This might be as a long establishing shot or as a part of a series of establishing shots. An example of this is 'Panic Room'. They effectively, engage the audience in narrative before the story has even begun.

2. Discrete title sequences

The titles aim not to give too much away regarding the plot or story line. It helps set the tone and gives clues that allude to what could happen later in the film. An example of this is 'Se7en'. They make the audience keen to know more.

3.Stylised title sequences

The titles are highly stylised. They can be a mixture of the other two sub-categories in terms of what we see but with filters, to create a combined effect. An example of this is 'The Taking Of The Pelham'.

My favourite film.

Clueless

My favourite film is Clueless (1995) as it was very well made and is entertaining to watch. This film uses an animation title sequence and vibrant colours to appeal to its audience, which would particularly be young people. The film starts off with the ident and doesn't give credits to crew members during the whole title sequence, which is different from most films produced around the 90's. Genre conventions are hinted within the title sequence so people would know if it would appeal to them or not, it shows young teenage girls shopping and partying which may relate to young girls and when they watch the film it would make them feel as if they are in the world of the movie.

blog 14.

Sequence 1 - Micro Analysis
Name of film: Skyfall
Genre of film: Action
Camera
There are a variety of camera shots for example close ups. they use very exaggerated angles from very high up. Furthermore they have used a lot a bright colours: the use of fire in slow motion angelic movement.
Mise-en-scene
The mies-en-scene is quite unusual as the first scene of the title sequence is set under water in and ocean. There are a multiple of different scenes which have different sceary for example one scene there in water and the next there in a mirrored room there are a lot of transitions. Also the character is wearing a suit and is dressed formally although in water, this could be the stereotypical look of James Bond.
Editing
There is a lot of editing contributed into the title sequence as they have mirror images and have used a lot of special effects to create a out of this world feel. Also there are a lot of cuts and transitions where there is a living close up that that turns into an extreme closer than then transitions into something different gradually. They have used very advance editing to ensure that the title sequence is as action packed as possible.
Sound
The song played is Adele - Skyfall. They made this song especially for this film. Also when guns are fired there is a gun shot sound and the breaking of glass etc.

Key plot idea introduced
The key plot introduced at the start is action and danger as Bond is being taken under water against his will by a mystical creature a 'big hand'. Also the fact there are guns gives and idea of an action plot, danger.
What order is the story line introduced?
It starts systematically in the present not a flash back. Contrastingly you could rebuke that concept as some shots are zooming into eyes and this could suggest a flash back but from the beginning its the present I believe.
Characters Introduced
The main character is introduced from the beginning as you see him plummeting down into the sea, falling into a whole. As he's under water he does not speak, but his body language doesn't seem to suggest he's in a panic so we can denote he's a brave character.
Social groups represented
The social group is represented in a negative way as the main character is in danger. Also you could suggest the use of binary opposites as there could be good vs bad, were James Bond is good and the hand dragging him down is 'bad'.

10. Four different types of film openings

Categorising title sequences

There are four main categories.

Titles on a blank screen:

  • Its the most common type of title sequence
  • Involves different kinds of typeface on the black background
  • Usually white typeface used on black background to create high contrast
  • Studios use them because of low budget sometimes
  • They can offer a simple, uncomplicated way to include institutional information at beginning of film.

Title sequence examples:

The title sequence "PSYCHO" had a black background in the title sequence with made a clear contrast therefore it was easy to read. The transmission between the credits and the music gives themes of the genre.

The title sequence "PULP FICTION" had a yellow font which i thought looked quiet cool. The yellow font also collaborates with the music well to create a certain theme which matches the genre. The 3D san serif font of the film name also highlights themes of the film. In addition they highlighted all the main characters in a white font which made them stand out. Near the end of the title sequence the music changes with shows the film is a hybrid genre as the music gave the film themes of a comedy and western action film.

Titles on still images:

  • More elaborate than simple white text on black background
  • Historical title card developed to include hand drawn borders and images
  • indicated a move past just text but a way to incorporate text with a visual image to hint tone and genre
  • Development of titles accompanied by still images coincides with credits getting longer to incorporate more than name of studio and film maker.
  • Studios beginning to support development of more elaborate title sequences and recognize contribution to film as a whole.
  • Combining different media to make background
  • Use of music and still images accompany credits to produce tone of film.
http://www.watchthetitles.com/articles/00138-Wimbledon

This title sequence uses still images which incorporates and shows themes of tennis as everything moves from side to side and the music with the sound of the ball is really effective.

Titles over images:

  • Incorporates credit titles with moving image behind titles, sound and usually no dialogue.
  • Moving images offer either metaphor, narrative thread or to help introduce tone or storyline.
Title sequence of Alfred Hitchcock. The music sets the tone of the film also in the title sequence the moving images in the background is effective as we can see where the film could be set which is significant. Slow transitions also contributed to setting the tone and collaborating with the music to give hints of the genre. The shots in the background were mainly long-shots to give an idea of the scenery.

Titles using Animation or Motion:

  • In the late 1990s, use of animated text in little sequences become more popular
  • Titles themselves become part of the moving image and are integrated together with the images we see.
  • Requires a lot of digital technology and stylized editing.
Title sequence examples:

James Bond: The animation in the "James Bonds" title sequence shows a metaphor about the fil and also vaguely tells us what the films about.

Catch me if you can: The animation in "Catch me if you can" shows themes of the film also helps to work out what the film is about.

Narrative title sequences: Titles integrated into the moving images in some way and begin as the film itself begins. This could be as a long established shot or as part of a series of establishing shots.

Discrete title sequences: Integrated into moving images isn't entirely clear what film plot is. It helps set the tone and gives clues to what could happen later. (Having an 'AHH' moment when significance of title is realised). Example: Fast transitions, close up shots, giving clues.

Stylised title sequences: Highly stylised. Can be a mixture of two sub-categories. Moving images and title credits stylised with filters, motion etc. Example: Clear contrast in moving images and typography. Example: stylised to fast forward in a rush hour setting.

Personal Preference: I prefer titles using animation or motion because it makes you think more about what the movie is about, discovering perhaps the metaphor behind the animation or motion like James Bond.
