Title sequences can be identified in four different categories.
My personal preference is titles using animation or motion because they
are the most creative and the possibilities within them are endless.
1. Narrative title sequences
The titles begin as the film begins- This might be as a long
establishing shot or as a part of a series of establishing shots. An example of
this is 'Panic Room'. They effectively, engage the audience in narrative before
the story has even begun.
2. Discrete title sequences
The titles aim not to give too much away regarding the plot or story
line. It helps set the tone and gives clues that allude to what could happen
later in the film. An example of this is 'Se7en'. They make the audience keen
to know more.
3.Stylised title sequences
The titles are highly stylised. They can be a mixture of the other two
sub-categories in terms of what we see but with filters, to create a combined
effect. An example of this is 'The Taking Of The Pelham'.
